A disaster is any unplanned event that disrupts business as usual. A disaster brings to mind floods, fires, and similar catastrophic events. Other more ordinary disasters that can affect the ability of a business to function are:
Power Outages or surges
Tornados
Frozen pipes
Leaky air conditioners or sprinklers
Failed air conditioning systems
Program logic bombs
Employee sabotage
Computer viruses
Malicious attacks
Customer concerns
There are three key reasons why a business should be concerned about business recovery:
Customer Satisfaction – Business Recovery is about survival. In today’s customer-oriented world, the company that is not able to maintain the highest levels of service will lose customers to companies that are able to keep operating. It is important to make sure a business recovery program focuses on how responsive a company can be to its customers if the business experienced an unexpected interruption of normal operations.
Business Exposure – Companies are becoming increasingly reliant on critical information and data to respond to their customer’s needs. However, the more we rely on our information systems, the more vulnerable we become.
Disaster Threats
–
Coupled with the reliance on information technology, the number and types of disasters are increasing.
The combination of these factors has led to an increased focus on developing business recovery programs.
